SmoothRizz vs Plug AI: browser access, tone control, and trial terms
· ~7 min
Isaiah Cerven · Founder, SmoothRizz
Disclosure: I built SmoothRizz, so I am competing with Plug AI. I am writing this comparison anyway because if you are searching for “Plug AI alternative” or “is Plug AI worth it,” you deserve an honest answer. Even from a biased source.
Plug AI and SmoothRizz look similar on the surface. Both let you upload a screenshot of a dating conversation and get AI-generated reply suggestions. Both have a spice/tone slider. But the products differ significantly in access model, pricing, platform support, and what happens when you open the app for the first time.
TL;DR
Plug AI has no free tier. Credit card required before you can use it. 4.4★ on iOS, 2.6★ on Android (paywall complaints). 1.5M+ downloads, mobile-only. SmoothRizz offers browser access, explicit tone control, and multiple reply options per input. Personalized replies require a trial or paid access. The free 3-day web trial requires a card, and the subscription renews unless canceled. Compare the workflow and trial terms before choosing. If you already know you want a mobile-native experience and are fine paying $4.99/week, Plug AI has the download numbers to back it up.

The paywall problem
The biggest difference between SmoothRizz and Plug AI is not a feature. It is the first 30 seconds of using the app.
Plug AI requires a credit card before you can generate a single reply. There is a free trial, but you must enter payment info first. There is no skip button, no “try for free” without commitment. This is by design, it is a proven monetization tactic, but it creates a trust problem for new users.
The result shows up in their reviews. Plug AI has a 2.6★ rating on Google Play. Well below the 4.0 threshold most users consider acceptable. The VIDA Select review and multiple Reddit threads cite the paywall as the primary frustration. On iOS, the rating is healthier at 4.4★, likely because App Store users are more accustomed to subscription-first models.
SmoothRizz also requires a trial or paid access for personalized AI replies. Web plans include subscriptions and one-time lifetime access. The web trial lasts 3 days and requires a card; it renews unless canceled. Static examples and demos are available before checkout, and the browser version needs no download. Free examples should not be confused with unlimited free generation.
Where Plug AI wins
Despite the paywall issues, Plug AI has genuine strengths:
- Download traction. 1.5 million+ downloads with ~86K in the last 30 days. That is significantly more distribution than SmoothRizz. When a product has that many users, it has been tested and iterated on at scale.
- Lower premium price. Plug AI charges ~$4.99/week. SmoothRizz charges $5.99/week (web) or $6.99/week (iOS). For users who know they want premium, Plug AI is cheaper.
- Style learning. Plug AI claims to learn your tone, humor, and vocabulary over time. SmoothRizz resets each session. You control tone via the slider, but the AI does not remember your preferences.
- Dating advice chatbot. Plug AI includes a general AI chatbot for dating advice beyond reply generation. SmoothRizz is purely focused on reply generation.
Where SmoothRizz wins
- Browser access. SmoothRizz works without an app download. Explore the static examples first, then start a free 3-day trial with a card required for personalized replies.
- Web access. Plug AI is mobile-only. SmoothRizz works in any browser on phone, tablet, or desktop. If you are texting from a computer, SmoothRizz is your only option between the two.
- Multiple reply options. SmoothRizz generates multiple reply cards per input so you can compare angles. Plug AI generates one at a time. Our production data shows users reject 81% of suggestions. Seeing multiple options at once saves time and produces better outcomes.
- Text paste support. SmoothRizz accepts both screenshots and plain text paste. Plug AI is screenshot-only. Text paste is faster and works when you cannot take a screenshot (desktop, cross-device).
- Higher iOS rating. SmoothRizz has 4.8★ on iOS vs Plug AI's 4.4★. Both are strong, but the gap widens dramatically on Android (SmoothRizz web vs Plug AI's 2.6★).
- Rizz Arena. Daily text competition with voting, trophies, and leaderboards. Plug AI has no social or gamification features.
